26 June is declared as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking since 1988 passed by the UN general assembly at DEC 7 1987 . This day is observed as an representation of its determination to reinforce engagement and collaboration to attain the goal of a global society free from drug and substance abuse. This year’s slogan of this day is “Health for Justice, Justice for Health”. The slogan underlies the importance of physical, mental, and social conditions involving health, human rights, criminal justice system and social service institutions such as drug addiction treatment centers, hospitals, correctional facilities etc. As a chronic health disorder, drug dependence needs to be prevented and treated in line with international standards and science. Health and justice cooperation is essential to closing the gaps, making sure responses include youth and women, fight discrimination and promote alternatives to imprisonment for people with drug use disorders.
Better understanding of drug problems is also needed. Research and analysis are necessary to inform policy and enable professional cooperation around evidence-based treatment and prevention solutions.
Every government agencies, NGO’s, private organizations, even all individuals are encouraged to observe this day. Every licensee drug addiction treatment center in Dhaka is observing the day by organizing their individual programs. Department of Narcotics Control arranged a rally and will be creating a human chain followed by a discussion meeting at Krishibid Institute. Honorable minister of Home Affairs of Bangladesh Mr. Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal as the chief guest of the meeting.
Social inclusion and building resilience, as well as rehabilitation and reintegration, are instrumental in helping prevent crime and violence. Connectedness and communication in families, schools and communities can play a major role in strengthening our societies’ defences against drugs. As we are involved directly to the treatment of drug addiction, we have a greater priority for this day. Utshob drug addiction treatment center arranged a rally and distributed leaflets at Jatrabari as an awareness programs to observe this day. We also created a human chain at the roadside of Dhaka-Chittagong Highway Toll Plaza.
